The Multi-Tester Pro goes deeper to find hidden faults

Autodiagnos, leading diagnostic company, have found a scenario once again where their highly regarded diagnostic tool, the Multi-Tester Pro managed to solve a problem which left technicians scratching their heads.

The scenario in question concerned a BMW, 5’ Series (E60), 520 diesel, 2005 model year.  This vehicle was taken to an auto electrical centre (who are keen Multi-Tester Pro users) from the body shop. Following the body repairs the Airbag warning lamp was on indicating a system fault. Seemingly this was going to be a simple job of connecting the Mt-Pro and diagnosing the Airbag system to identify the cause of the problem and addressing it accordingly. The Mt-Pro coverage on this model is competitive; supporting over 30 different systems including 3 independent airbag controllers (Left satellite, Right satellite and vehicle Central satellite).

The technician was able to read and clear a selection of intermittent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC’s) from these modules but the airbag warning remained illuminated on the vehicle LCD display. Following advice the technician used the ‘Short Test’ function found within all later supported BMW models hoping to find related DTC’s stored within other vehicle body or chassis controllers. The ‘Short Test’ did indeed find faults relating to the Airbag system stored in one of the vehicle ‘Gateway Modules’; thus proving how information is now shared across the vehicle CAN network and is not restricted to a single controller. The fault turned out to be a loose connector on one of the side airbag units located in the door; it was fixed in 10 minutes – all thanks to the Multi-Tester Pro.
